Practice swinging without a ball to swing at. Just concentrate on your swing. Start slowly and increase speed as you feel you are swinging correctly. Saw this on the Haney Project with Charles Barkley.

Slow down on your back swing. When you get to the top of your back swing. You would want to start your down swing with your body. The drill is on your back swing, count 1000 and on 2000 start your down swing by using your hips to start the swing. Good luck.

You have to swing the club with your hands, try chopping them off and see what happens. What I suspect you are asking is how do you stop prematurely releasing your wrist cock or lag or whatever term you prefer.

A drill that I often employ to accomplish this timing issue is the “whoosh drill.” Simply turn your club upside-down and grip it next to the head with your grip addressing where your ball would be. When you swing you will hear a “whoosh” sound. Make sure that whoosh occurs slightly AFTER where the ball would be. That ensures that your max club head speed is occurring as you hit the ball, not before.

If you have a few bucks and want to quantify how you are doing, get a swing speed radar device. Do not use one that attaches to your club, they are unreliable and may add weight to your club causing you to develop swing faults. You can find these things on Ebay for under $100.
